10 Biggest Website Mistakes
A comment that often passes between Andrew and I when we look at new websites is “What do these people do?”
I can’t tell you how many times I go to websites and don’t really know what they actually do. They have strange business names and vague descriptions. They have images that don’t represent what the business offers and honestly I usually just click away.
On the rare occasion that I stay, or I have had to stay because the site belongs to a potential client, I have had to search around and try and work it out. This is a very frustrating experience.

A Frustrated Website Visitor
It is imperative that a visitor be able to work out exactly what you do in the first 3 seconds. If they are searching Google, they are usually looking for something specific. If you can’t show them they have clicked on a website that will give them what they are looking for they are gone.
These days we all suffer from Search ADD. Despite Google’s best efforts we often land on websites that bear no resemblance to what we are looking for and we are used to this, so we are ready to move on quickly. We have little tolerance for confusion.
So have a look at your website today from the perspective of a potential customer who may not understand your industry and see if someone like this can recognize what you do instantly. If they can’t then get your site changed immediately, you are losing potential customers.
I spoke yesterday about getting someone who has never been to your website to go through it. The first thing you want them to do is to briefly write down what they believe you do. Ask them to get this impression in the first 3 – 5 seconds they are on your home page.
